First-due apartment fire in the Borough

By EMS Lieutenant John Millili
June 13, 2009

Shortly after 6:00 pm on Saturday, MCEDS struck the box for an apartment fire on Elio Circle in Trappe Boro. Engine companies 77, 34, and 66 as well as Ladders 77 and 54, Rescue 86, and Medic 324 were alerted, and responding units were advised of multiple calls reporting a working fire. Chief 77 (B. Long) arrived within 3 minutes to find a two-story apartment building with heavy smoke showing from the second floor.

First-due unit Ladder 77 was ordered to split its crew and operate as a Quint, simultaneously stretching an 1.75" handline, completing primary search, and horizontally ventilating while the Chauffer threw the stick to the roof. The first-in crew found fire in 2 rooms in the 2nd floor apartment, and extinguished the same. As the engine companies arrived they established a water supply, stretched an additional handline, and checked the adjacent apartments for extension. The truck company from Limerick opened the roof over the fire apartment, and Rescue 86 had the RIT.

The fire was quickly extinguished, all searches were negative, and there was minimal damage beyond the original fire apartment. EMS established the rehab group and evaluated one resident of an adjacent apartment. No injuries were reported. The occupants of the fire apartment were determined not to have been home at the time of the fire. Command placed the job under control at the 20-minute mark, and Station 77 units remained on scene for approximately 2 hours completing overhaul and assisting the Borough Fire Marshal.
