Training at the Montgomery Fire Academy's Structural Burn Building
By Firefighter Branden Sisca
June 20, 2009
Trappe Fire Company took the Engine down to the Montgomery County Fire Academy in Conshohocken for a series of evolutions in the school's structural burn building. Trappe was accompanied by Skippack, Harleysville, Schwenksville, and Perkiomen.
It was a very beneficial day for all who attended because a wealth of knowledge was gained by all firefighters, and everyone got a lot of hands-on time. Some of the assigned tasks for more experienced firefighters were interior fire attacks and search and rescue. Some newer interior firefighters were able to get the chance to see what the heat from the fire feels like and visibility with a smoke condition. The juniors and exterior firefighters were assigned tasks such as establishing a water supply, accountability, ladder placement, and horizontal ventilation. The juniors were also given the opportunity to perform an exterior fire attack when the stokers lit off a fire within the basement of the burn building. Companies trained in both the commercial and residental sides of the burn building.
Training at the Fire Academy's burn building was an enriching experience for all, and Trappe Fire Company eagerly awaits the next chance to go, so we can gain more experience and further our education to help better serve the community and surrounding areas.
