| Crews from 77 Fire and 324 EMS got together for some joint rescue training at the old Trappe Middle School. There are real world incidents that occur in which both Fire & EMS must work together to safe peoples lives. In this case crews were tasked with rescuing a construction worker that fell 20' from some scaffolding to the 2nd story roof of the school.
After fire crews made access to the roof, EMS was dispatched up the ladders to begin patient care and stabilization. Fire crews then set up a rigging system to transport their patient down to the ground safely. Challenges arose when Fire crews learned that the patient needed to be on oxygen and had their heart rhythm paced by an external monitor which couldn't be disconnected. The decision was made to lash the patient in first and then use webbing to tie in the monitor as well. The patient would remain on oxygen until the last second before descending roof for the ground.
Fire crews utilized a ladder slide system where the patient would slide down the face of the ladder while tied into a Stokes basket. It was the first time for many of the crews in dealing with this type of system so much time was spent covering all the rigging and knots.
Once the patient was on the ground, the crews disconnected the patient from the rigging system and handed him over to EMS to continue treatment and transport to medical facility.
Every monday night, Trappe Fire Company holds fire training and all from the public are welcome to attend and watch. |
